DIY Gumball Machine Costume

Happy Halloween! This weekend I realized I needed a costume to wear to school on Monday and wanted something cute and easy to make. As I was browsing through Pinterest I stumbled upon a gumball machine costume and knew that it would be perfect. All you need to make the costume is a white t-shirt, pompoms (I used two packs), and a hot glue gun. From start to finish the whole project probably took me 30 minutes and I am really happy with the way it turned out. To finish the look, pair the top with red pants and you're ready to go! I'm hoping we get lots of tick-or-treaters tonight so I can see all of the little kids costumes and hand out candy during homework breaks :)

Friday Favorites

Is it just me or did October absolutely fly by? I only have one more college application to submit, so I am happy to finally have a ton of my stress about that relieved... now may the college acceptance odds be ever in my favor :) This weekend I have my work cut out for me with a huge research paper and a few other projects for the end of the first term. Hopefully I can catch up on sleep and just have a relaxing weekend.

One: Cross Country Senior Day
Tuesday was my last home cross country meet ever. Before the meet we had a ceremony for the seniors where our parents came and we gave them a rose and took pictures. It was absolutely freezing, but besides that my race went really well. I set a PR and achieved my goal of running a 5K under a 7'45" pace, so I was happy to end my regular season on a high note. I am running in a meet tomorrow and then again next Saturday and then the season will officially be over which is crazy!

I am super excited to have shoppable images on my post, Green + Black from earlier this week! We teamed up with Linklay to make the post a bit more user friendly and interactive, let me know what you think about this in the comments below.

Three: Halloween
With everything going on right now, I almost forgot that Halloween is on Monday! I am planning on making my costume this weekend and carving pumpkins with my family on Sunday night during the Patriots game.

October Playlist

I have been listening to a ton of music this month and am pretty edited about this playlist! I checked in with you guys on twitter this week to get your opinions on my monthly playlist posts and it appears that you really like them, so they are here to stay! Hearing what you guys like to see on the blog makes producing new content so much better as I want to post what you want to read. If there is anything you ever really want me to post about, feel free to shoot me an email (preppybythesea@gmail.com) or leave a comment on the blog!

As for the music goes, I have been loving Bruno Mars' new song along with Caroline for more fun and upbeat singalong type songs. In the past I have never really been one to listen to music while doing homework. However, I have found that listening to music makes writing supplements and working on projects a little bit more bearable. I have had The Head And The Heart on loop this month especially since going to the concert. Their music is perfect to listen to while working, along with my tried and true, John Mayer :)

Green + Black

dress | cardigan (under $50) | booties similar | glasses | necklaces 1 & 2 | clutch similar

Yesterday my mom and I were talking about different trends and we both agreed that our all time favorite one is hands down long cardigans. Living in New England and both being girls that are constantly cold makes the long cardigan trend a clear winner; we can look cute but also be bundled up and stay warm in the winter. I saw this sweater on another blogger earlier this fall and knew that I had to have it, however it took forever to come back in stock. The deep green color is so pretty and surprisingly matches a lot of my clothes. The sweater itself is soft and stretchy, but it runs very big. For reference I am 5'6" and typically wear a size 2 and have a lot of room in the size XS. If you are on the fence about the sizing, order two! Nordstrom has free shipping and free returns, which is a game changer in the online shopping world :)

I paired the cardigan with one of my all time favorite dresses from Madewell. The dress is definitely more on the business casual end of the spectrum, so I dressed it down a little bit with the sweater and booties. I purchased this dress from my winter formal last year and have gotten so much wear out of it since then. There is some leather detailing on the sides (not shown in pictures) which adds a fun and flirty twist to a simple LBD. Happy Tuesday!

Complete Fall Fashion Guide

This post has been a long time coming... somehow it took me until the end of october to complete it, so I hope you enjoy! Stores have been adding so many new products over the past couple of weeks so I have been compiling my favorites to make a collective fall fashion guide. Many of the items on this list are basic essentials for any year (Barbour, Patagonia, and most of the shoes), however a few of the pieces will incorporate some fun trends into your closet this fall. Free people is honestly one of those brands that just intimidates me; I know there are always some super cute hidden gems on their site, however the over the top boho items overwhelm me. It's kind of like Forever 21, in that I have not really shopped there since middle school, and I have to mentally prepare myself before searching though their products. Surprisingly, this fall I have purchased two or three of their items via Nordstrom and am completely in love. All of their tops are insanely soft and flattering making them great for those chilly mornings when you want to look cute but also stay comfortable. This loose split back pullover has become one of my go-to pieces this fall and I highly recommend it! Are any of my picks also some of your fall must haves?

Friday Favorites

We made it through another week- TGIF! This week has been pretty light in the homework department, so I have been able to do a lot of fun things that I typically can't do monday-friday. Today after school I am driving down to Providence to visit my friend from Colorado while she is visiting on the east coast! I have not spent a lot of time in Providence, so I am excited to explore the city a little bit and get dinner at a fun restaurant. On Saturday I am going to try to wrap up all of my applications, and sunday I am volunteering at my favorite event for the education foundation in my town! Do you have any exciting plans for the weekend?

One: Foliage
The foliage in my town is in full swing and it looks so pretty everywhere you go! Last sunday I went on a really long run and couldn't help but snapping a few pictures along the way. This time of year really makes me appreciate living in New England.

Two: the Head and the Heart Concert
On Tuesday night my friend Clare and I went into Boston for the Head and the Heart concert and had such a blast! The concert was at the Orpheum theatre which was such a cool venue. It is one of the oldest theaters in the United States and looks more like a place you would see an orchestra or a ballet than a concert. That being said, it is pretty small so you would have relatively good seats anywhere in the theatre. We were in the fourth row which was awesome and they sounded amazing! The band was so great live and you could really tell how talented they all are.

Three: Julia Engel's Meetup
Julia added a story on her snapchat on Tuesday saying that she was going to have a last minute meet up in Boston on Wednesday night and Julianna and I instantly cleared our schedules so we could go! The meet up was hosted at Tatte, which is a cute bakery/ coffee shop in Beacon Hill (such an aesthetically pleasing place #justbloggerthings). Julia is our favorite blogger so it was so exciting that she was in our city and that we got to meet her! She was seriously so sweet and we got to chat with her for a while about her travels and blogging.

Senior Quote

This week our senior quotes had to be submitted for the yearbook. Picking out a quote had been in the back of my mind for a couple months, however I just kept putting it off until the night before... there's just so much going on right now :) At my school most people's quotes are not too serious and intellectual, so I knew that I wanted something funny, but also something that represented my personality well. For those of you that don't know, Parks and Rec is my favorite show. Everything about it is hilarious from the general plot to each character's insanely unique personality.  Also, if you follow our Instagram then you likely know that I am a breakfast/brunch enthusiast. When watching the show I always related to Ron and Leslie's love breakfast food, so after doing a little bit of research I stumbled upon this gem and knew it was meant to be. Though it's not your traditional senior quote, I think that it is absolutely perfect and suits me and my love for breakfast perfectly. Remember, there has never been a sadness that can't be cured by breakfast foods... especially a good plate of cinnamon french toast!

Tie Back

top | pants | flats | bag similar | necklace similar | watch

I purchased this shirt over the summer and could not be more obsessed. Grey tops are my favorite for fall and winter as they are a little bit more interesting than white, but can be worn with practically anything. I don't have any items on my closet with fun backs, so this is definably a great addition. The only downside is it does go pretty low and you need to wear either a sticky bra or a bralette. This top can be a little bit dressier with jewelry and nice shoes, or can be worn casually with ripped jeans and converse. Additionally, the longer back makes it great to wear with leggings! This outfit has me so excited for more fall looks to come!

Homecoming Recap

Saturday was homecoming at my school and it was such a blast! It's honestly hard to believe that this was my last homecoming, however it was by far and away the best one. I got to school at 9 am and was there all day watching the games (we won every game!), working at tables for clubs and sports, and volunteering in the concession with a bunch of other seniors. Girl's soccer is huge at my school as they have been state champs the past two years and are currently undefeated. The soccer game was so intense and they won in the last two minutes of the game which was so exciting! The day was kind of bittersweet as it was our first "last" of senior year, but I don't think it could have gone any better.

After spending the day at the field supporting our teams, we got ready for the dance. The senior class always plans the homecoming dance, so it made it a little bit more special knowing that we picked the theme, planned the decorations, and got everything all set up. This year we decided to go with a red, white, and black theme as those are our school colors and we wanted to have there be a strong sense of school pride throughout the day. All of the girls wore dresses in school colors, although almost all of my friends ended up wearing black. Our homecoming dance is super casual, no one goes with dates and it's just at the school, unlike prom. I had the most fun ever at school dance as all the seniors got really into it and danced the night away! Here's to making the most of all the "lasts" this year!

Friday Favorites

Happy Friday! Homecoming is on saturday so this week was spirit week! We started the week off with pajama day (my favorite) followed by tie dye day, Hawaiian day, and finally school spirit day to get ready for the pep rally! My friends and I have gotten really into the themes and have dressed up every day- it's the little things like this that make senior year so fun. Tomorrow I will be at school all day working at tables for various clubs, cheering on our teams, and finally going to my last homecoming dance. Do you have any exciting plans for the weekend?

One: Cape Cod
Last weekend my family and I went to the cape for part of the long weekend. I had not been back since school started and it was so nice to go for beach walks, pop into the candy store, and just relax in my favorite place.

Two: Foliage
On Monday my friends and I made the three hour journey up to Franconia Notch State Park in New Hampshire. I have been dying to go on a scenic dive throughout New England during this time of year and oh my gosh did it not disappoint. The foliage is absolutely breathtaking everywhere you look. This year I really want to go on more day trips with friends and take advantage of all the awesome places just a few hours from home.

Three: Hiking
Once we got to Franconia Notch, we set out on a 4 mile hike. I have not been on a real hike in two or three years and now I can't wait to go on more. If you are familiar with the area, we did the Lonesome Lake trail which is the perfect half day hike. The trail is pretty steep, however the views of the lake at the top are so pretty and worth the trek. There is an AMC hut at the top of the trail that we stopped at for homemade cookies and hot apple cider, which was just what we needed as the temperature started to drop quickly. After last weekend's fun adventure, we definitely want to try an overnight hike next time!

Steal Her Style: Fall Neutrals

sweater | skirt | clutch | shoes | cuff | watch | earrings | sunglasses

This summer during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale I purchased a suede skirt and got an incredible deal! Since purchasing it, I have been pinning so many different looks featuring them to help me come up with some ideas on how to style mine. Like I said in my outfit post this week, I have been stocking up on basics this fall and the moment I saw this neutral look I knew I had to recreate it. An all neural outfit can sometimes be daunting to pull off, however with fun shoes and accessories you can add a pop of color or print to spice up and other wise bland look. When planning my outfits this is not something I would have ever created on my own, but I am now looking forward to wearing something similar this fall!

Burnt Orange

shirt | jeans | booties | sunglasses

I'm finally back with a new outfit post! After multiple weekends of rain in a row, we finally had some beautiful fall weather and my mom and I were able to get out and shoot some new looks. Orange is always a color I have avoided because it doesn't look that great on me, however when I was at Nordstrom the other weekend and spotted this flowy burnt orange top I knew I had to try it! Burnt orange is the perfect color for fall, and this short sleeve tee is a great piece to transition into cooler weather or layer with a cute jacket or sweater later in the fall. This year I have been stocking up on lots of great basics that I know I will be able to wear in many different ways and for multiple seasons. Sometimes I forget to look at Nordstrom, but they have released so many awesome pieces this year and I highly recommend checking it out if you are in the need of some new fall items for your wardrobe!

Getting Better + Staying Healthy

I don't know if it is the stress of senior year, the germs at school, or the cold and rainy weather but I just can't seem to avoid getting colds this year. I am not the kid that gets sick all the time, however we are only five weeks into school and I have spent at least two of those weeks battling different colds. Last week was miserable. I started off not feeling great on monday and then went on an extremely difficult run at practice where I genuinely felt the worst I've ever felt during a workout. After talking to my coach I took tuesday off and just went home to rest. However, after that my week just kept getting busier, I had a meet on wednesday, a meeting before school everyday, and tons of assignments due that kept me up late. By Friday I just felt awful. Unfortunately this cold hit right before the long weekend and I had to skip the football game and going out with my friends to catch up on my sleep and try to get better. Although there is always a sense of fomo when staying home, it is so important to know yourself and do everything you can to get better and stay healthy. I apologize for that little rant/life update, but now I will share some of my favorite tips and tricks for getting over a cold, or just avoiding them in the first place!

Go to bed early// This is probably the best thing that you can do when you start to feel crummy. If you can get to bed by 8:30 and get as much sleep as possible on a school night it will help you so much. Also, take advantage of weekend nights and go to bed early and sleep in late.

Take NyQuil// Last month when I was down in North Carolina on college tours I had a horrible cold. I needed to be up and attentive for my tour in the morning so my dad went to the drug store and got me NyQuil. I had not used NyQuil that much before that but oh my gosh is it amazing when you are super stuffed up. I was able to sleep through the night without constantly waking up to blow my nose, and felt 100x better in the morning. Different people react in different ways to medicine, but find a cold medicine that works well for you to improve your sleep with a cold.

Drink lots of water// This one applies to both staying healthy and getting better. Water keeps you hydrated and healthy so you should always try to drink a lot throughout the day, even if you are not sick!

Drink Tea// I find that drinking tea when I am sick makes me feel so much better. The warm water is so calming and helps me relax before bed.

Eat Strawberries and Oranges// Both strawberries and oranges are a great source of vitamin C and will help you get over a cold, or just maintain a healthy balance of vitamins in your day to day life.
