Winter Workouts

Staying in shape during the winter can often times prove to be quite difficult, especially when you live somewhere that gets very chilly. Working out during these months can be quite rewarding come spring break time when you're back in a bathing suit! Although I am not as consistent with my winter exercise routine as I am in the fall and spring when I have sports everyday after school, I still try to make an effort to do something a couple days a week. Here are three easy ways to get some excursive during the chilly months, you will thank yourself later!

+ Go for a run
If the weather is 25 degrees or above and sunny, running in the winter is actually quite nice. It may take a few times to figure out what layers work best for you to stay warm without overheating. I usually wear leggings, a long sleeve dry-fit type shirt, a quarter-zip running top, a windbreaker and gloves if it is super cold. If you are in the market for some running gloves, buy the kind you can use your phone with so you can use your music or an app to track your run!  If you have the perfect playlist and keep a steady pace you won't even notice that its freezing!

+ Indoor ab workout
There are two different ways that I approach an ab work out, the first being 8 minute abs. With this, select 8 different ab exercises and do each for one minute. This can be difficult if you have not done abs in a little bit, so to ease your way up to this I have another way of approaching it. The first day you start pick five or six different type of ab work outs and do 15 of them and then hold a plank for 45 seconds, each day add five more repetitions to the abs and five seconds 5 seconds (or more if you are up for it) to the plank. Once you feel that you have gotten back into the swing of things start the 8 min workout. I find that if you do this every night before you shower it helps work it into a routine and finding a few songs that help the time pass never hurts!

+ Join a local gym
Many gym memberships are fairly inexpensive and if you motivate yourself to use it this will be a great monthly expense. There is so much more to offer at a gym than at your home, including a wide selection of weights and machines. The elliptical, treadmill and erg are my personal favorite machines. If you are looking for some guidance for your workouts, go in on a trainer with a group of friends to cut the cost down!

+ Take a yoga class
I have not taken yoga in a while, but I remember really liking it when I did it. If you are sore, it is a great way to stretch out. Also, we are currently in the middle of exams so I know that a yoga class might help relieve some of the stress I am currently experiencing!

Silver

bag | nail polish | shirt | sandals | watch | flats | bracelet | clutch | necklace | heels

If you have been reading the blog recently, you most limey know about my new found obsession with all things silver. For the past few years I have really only bought gold jewelry, from monogrammed necklaces to bracelets and I kind of wanted a change. In seventh grade I received a sterling silver signet ring for Christmas, I wear it every day and never take it off. This year when I was deciding what color watch I wanted, I decided to go with the silver to match the ring and I am so glad that I did. Since receiving that, I have gone crazy for all things silver! Both Julianna and I purchased the silver striped shirt from J. Crew Factory. It can be dressed up or dressed down and worn year round! This spring, I definitely want to invest in a pair of silver Jack Rogers... although I already own too many pairs! What are your thoughts on this metallic?

Feeling Fruity

After Christmas break I always feel so out of shape and try to get back into healthy food after two weeks of sugar cookies galore! Fortunately, I love fruit so it is not that difficult! During the winter months especially, citrus fruits are in season making them one of my top fruits picks. Today I am sharing four of my favorite healthy fruit snacks to indulge in!

+ Grapefruit
This past week I have had a grapefruit almost every morning with my breakfast or after school for a snack. Personally I like the ruby red ones the best, they are a little bit sweeter and flavorful. Once you finish up the fruit, don't forget to squeeze it and drink the juice!

+ Banana & Peanut Butter
This is one of my all time favorite snacks! I remember my first summer going to camp and hating bananas and seeing everyone eating this at breakfast or lunch. One day, I decided to give it a try because I did not like what they were serving and I loved it! Bananas are so good for you and the peanut butter provides some extra protein. Sprinkle some granola on top for a crunch effect and scoop out with a spoon! This snack will fill you up for a while! Also, I find this a great snack to eat before a run- enough to give you the energy you need without getting any cramps!

+ Yogurt Parfait
Yogurt is one of my favorite breakfasts (or lunches) and making a parfait makes the presentation a little nicer! I hate milk, so eating yogurt is a good alternative to get the calcium that dairy provides. I used Chobani original greek yogurt- I like the taste of greek yogurt better than regular plus it's better for you! For the layers, I did granola, raspberries, bananas, more granola and sprinkled honey on top to add a little bit of sweetness.

+ Oranges
Cara Cara oranges are my all time favorite, they are so sweet and juicy! Oranges are super easy to toss in your bag and eat on the go. I also love clementines to eat with lunch or have as a snack.

What are your favorite healthy snacks?

Friday Favorites

Congrats, you survived this week! The dreaded week after Christmas break is over and you can take a breath and relax this weekend! It was nice to be back with friends that I hadn't seen in two weeks and feel like I am finally starting to get back into the swing of things!

As I said in my Pink & Navy post earlier this week, I am loving the watch my friends gave me for my birthday- if you're reading this thanks so much, you guys know me so well :) I have had my eye on this for a while and decided that the silver was perfect and the little pops of pink add the iconic color Kate Spade is known for!

Two: Silver Essie Nail Polish and Dec/Jan edition of People Style Watch
I received Essie "no place like chrome" in my stocking for Christmas and painted my nails with it for NYE. I'm obsessed! I have been sporting it for over a week, it goes with everything and is a great shade for winter. Easing back into school, I like to take an hour or so when I get home to relax. I have found myself watching an episode of Grey's Anatomy or reading this Style Watch Magazine. Reese Witherspoon is one of my favorite actresses and I was so excited when this month's edition arrived at my house! From Legally Blonde to her amazing sense of style, what's not to love!

Three: Coffee, Tea & Layers
This week has been FREEZING! Yesterday morning, I woke up to -19 degrees. Naturally, I refreshed the school cancelations and delays quite a few times, but my school is very stubborn and lucky me got to go to class! I have been relying on coffee to wake myself up this past week and stay warm. I have also been loving the peach tea from Celestial Seasonings. My puffy patagonia jacket and better sweater have been my go to pieces in the mornings!

What have you been loving this week?

Pink & Navy

The snow and sub zero weather have finally made it to Massachusetts! Nothing screams layering weather and cozy sweaters than January. Today I am wearing my all time favorite hot pink cords from Vineyard Vines. In the winter, it can sometimes be difficult to have a pop of color but these pants definitely get the job done. In my opinion, cords are the best pants for winter because they are so soft and significantly warmer than jeans. I have talked about my love of kids clothing and I am going to do it again today. I loved the women's navy fleece vest from Vineyard Vines and was so excited when I saw the boys version at my local store. I scored this vest on one of their friends & family sales for $40 and the boys large fit perfectly! Happy Wednesday, were halfway to the weekend!

Big thank you to my amazing friends who got me this beautiful silver Kate Spade watch for my birthday!
